How To Clean The Nit Comb

One of the great things about our amazing nit comb is that you can use it over and over again and still get the same great results. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly after each treatment. This video will show you how.

Written Lice Treatment Instructions:

  1. Shampoo and condition hair with whatever normal shampoo you use. (If you have oily products in your hair that won’t come out with shampoo, use Dawn dishwashing liquid to shampoo your hair. Dawn cuts through oil better than shampoo.) 
  2. Dry hair completely and detangle it. Do NOT put any hair products (gel, mousse, detangling spray, oil, etc.) in hair. 
  3. Gently tumble bottle of Lice Choice Head Lice Spray upside down for a few seconds to mix enzymes (do not shake). 
  4. Cover eyes with a paper towel or cloth and saturate head COMPLETELY from the scalp to the ends with Lice Choice Head Lice Spray. NOTE: On some heads, you will notice that the solution foams up A LOT. On other heads, the solution may not foam up much at all. And some hair will soak up the solution like a sponge, so you will have to keep spraying to get it fully saturated. With long or thick hair, make sure all the underneath layers are well saturated. WARNING: If you leave any dry spots, the lice will find them and hide out there! So to be fully effective, it’s better to use too much spray than not enough. 
  5. Detangle hair. 
  6. Go to appropriate section below for further instructions, depending on the length of the hair. 

Long Hair Head Lice Treatment Instructions

  1. You will be dividing the head into 4 vertical columns of hair. First, create two halves by parting the hair straight down the middle, from the front of the head all the way down to the nape of the neck. Choose one half of the head to start on. Divide that side in half again, so you have two smaller vertical sections (one section in front of the ear and one behind it). Use a metal clip to hold back the section of hair that is behind the ear so it’s out of your way. 
  2. Focusing on the front section of hair, start at the BOTTOM of the head and create a very THIN horizontal row of hair. It should be thin enough that you can see through it. If it's too thick, your comb will miss some of the nits! Clip the remainder of the hair above it up on top of the head to keep it away from the row you are combing.
  3. Using your nit comb, comb that row of hair from underneath and then again from the top down, so that each section is getting combed from two different directions. Make sure your nit comb starts against the scalp (so you don’t miss any nits that are close to the scalp) and then use a scooping motion to pull the comb through to the ends of the hair. Wipe your comb on a plain, white paper towel so you can see the lice and nits you are removing. If there is foam on the paper towel, you can use another paper towel to flatten the foam so you can see everything. 
  4. Unclip the hair that was on top of the head and create another THIN horizontal row of hair, above the one you just combed. Repeat the same combing process in step #3. Keep working, row by row, from the bottom of the head to the top, until that column of hair is complete. CAUTION: Make sure you carefully comb the hair around the face so you don’t miss any nits that may be right on the hairline. 
  5. When that entire front vertical column of hair is done, clip all that hair out of the way and begin working on the second vertical section that is behind the ear to the halfway mark around the back of the head. Repeat the combing process, working your way around the head, section by section.
     
    IMPORTANT: If the hair starts to dry out during the process, re-spray each section before you comb it. It’s important for the hair to stay saturated during the entire treatment. Also, if you are using our magnifying goggles (highly recommended), it’s important that you look through the goggles during the entire treatment because you will spot nits that you would have missed without the goggles.
  6. Re-treat every 4 days. When you do a treatment and don’t see any nits or bugs on your paper towels, wait 4 days and do one more extra treatment to be sure you didn’t miss anything. When you have two treatments in a row with nothing on the paper towels, you are done with treatments!

Short Hair Head Lice Treatment Instructions

  1. The treatment will be more challenging with short hair because you can’t use clips to separate sections to keep track of where you combed. Start on one side of the head and comb the section of hair that is in front of the ear. Start at the BOTTOM of the head and work your way up to the top. Carefully comb small, THIN sections at a time, to make sure you are being thorough. Each section of hair should be thin enough that you can see through it. If it's too thick, your comb will miss some of the nits! Comb each section in multiple directions: from the underneath going up, from the top going down, from the hairline going towards the back, and from the back going towards the hairline. With short hair, you will need to overlap each section MULTIPLE times to be sure you didn’t miss anything. Make sure your nit comb starts against the scalp (so you don’t miss any nits that are close to the scalp) and use a scooping motion to pull the comb through to the ends of the hair. Wipe your comb on a plain, white paper towel so you can see the lice and nits you are removing. If there is foam on the paper towel, you can use another paper towel to flatten the foam so you can see everything. CAUTION: Make sure you carefully comb the hair around the face so you don’t miss any nits that may be right on the hairline.
  2. Work your way around the head, one small section at a time, until you’ve combed the entire head, with multiple overlaps on each section. IMPORTANT: If the hair starts to dry out during the process, re-spray each section before you comb it. It’s important for the hair to stay saturated during the entire treatment. Also, if you are using our magnifying goggles (highly recommended), it’s important that you look through the goggles during the entire treatment because you will see nits that you would have missed without the goggles. 
  3. Re-treat every 4 days. When you do a treatment and don’t see any nits or bugs on your paper towels, wait 4 days and do one more extra treatment to be sure you didn’t miss anything. When you have two treatments in a row with nothing on the paper towels, you are done with treatments!  

After Completing Each Treatment

We recommend that you leave the Head Lice Spray in the hair for 24 hours because it puts a protective coating on the hair that helps prevent re-infestations. The solution is not oily, so when it dries you won’t be able to tell it’s in the hair. You can style your hair as usual (a dryer and flat iron is fine) and use your normal styling products (gel, mousse, hair spray) on top of our solution

Cleaning The Nit Comb

Hold the comb under warm running water and use an old toothbrush to force the nits out between the teeth. If you have our magnifying goggles, look through them to be sure you got all the nits out. If you do not have our goggles, hold the comb up to a bright light to see if there are nits stuck between the teeth. Then wash the comb in warm, soapy water, rinse well and air dry.

Storing Our Head Lice Products

Store product between 45°-95° to preserve enzymes. Do not store in a bathroom, garage, laundry room, or anywhere that has extreme fluctuations in temperature or humidity.
